The Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) has officially launched the Waste to Wealth / Circular Economy Youth Empowerment Programme 2025, a nationwide initiative designed to equip Nigerian youths with profitable skills in recycling, renewable energy, waste management and climate-friendly innovation.
This program is part of the government’s wider plan to support job creation, reduce environmental pollution and empower young people with practical skills they can use to start their own eco-friendly businesses.
Through the FMYD Waste to Wealth initiative, thousands of youths will receive hands-on training, startup support, and technical knowledge that can help them turn common waste materials into valuable products, energy sources and income-generating opportunities.
Applications are currently open to interested candidates across all 36 states and the FCT.
What the FMYD Waste to Wealth Programme Is All About
The initiative focuses on transforming Nigeria’s waste problem into an opportunity for income, innovation, and environmental sustainability. Young people will learn various waste conversion techniques, business skills and scalable job-creation methods.
The training covers five major areas:
1. Waste Recycling (Core Practical Training)
Participants will learn modern recycling techniques such as:
- Plastic recycling and pellet production
- Paper recycling for reusable materials
- Wood repurposing and craft production
- Metal and scrap recycling for industrial use
- Glass recycling for manufacturing and construction
These are high-demand skills capable of generating steady income in local communities.
2. Upcycling & Upscaling (Creative & Commercial Skills)
This category focuses on:
- Textile upcycling
- Fashion accessories from waste fabric
- Craft items and reusable materials
Upcycling is one of the fastest-growing green-economy skills worldwide and can easily be turned into a profitable business.
3. Renewable Energy & Community Energy Solutions
Participants will gain practical experience in:
- Solar energy installation & maintenance
- Production of biodegradable energy sources
- Wind turbine basics
- Turning waste into fertilizers & animal feed
- Solar stoves manufacturing
- Electric vehicle & tricycle maintenance
This empowers youths to tap into Nigeria’s booming renewable-energy market.
4. Ecopreneurship & Green Business Development
This section prepares participants for real business ownership through:
- Entrepreneurship capacity building
- Financial literacy & revenue planning
- Waste product export training
- Eco-literacy
- Product trading strategies
- Repair, reuse, and resell models
The goal is to help beneficiaries start sustainable, climate-smart businesses.
5. Biomass, Afforestation & Climate Restoration
Trainees will learn:
- Large-scale tree planting
- Reforestation & environmental restoration
- Biomass development for agricultural use
6. Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Recycling
A fast-growing sector where participants are trained in:
- Recycling of phones, TVs, computers, and electronics
- Repair & refurbishment
- Safe disposal techniques
- Turning e-waste components into reusable materials
This is one of the most profitable arms of the Waste to Wealth Programme.
