About PTDF Overseas Scholarship 2025

The PTDF is a federal government agency under the Ministry of Petroleum Resources tasked with developing local human capacity and technological expertise for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Through its overseas scholarship scheme, PTDF supports qualified Nigerian students to pursue postgraduate studies in specialized fields vital to the petroleum industry.

For the 2025/2026 academic year, the PTDF will offer scholarships for MSc and PhD studies at selected partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia. These universities have been carefully chosen to ensure academic excellence and alignment with PTDF’s objectives.

Who Can Apply? – PTDF scholarships Eligibility & Requirements

General Criteria

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive. Selection is based on academic excellence, relevant experience, research potential and alignment with the petroleum industry’s needs.

Selection Criteria Include:

  • Academic performance and degree classifications
  • Full academic transcripts and additional qualifications
  • Professional body memberships
  • Relevance and feasibility of the proposed study or research
  • Quality of publications (for PhD applicants)

MSc Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the PTDF Overseas MSc scholarship, applicants must meet the following:

  • A minimum of a Second Class Upper (2:1) in a relevant first degree. Second Class Lower (2:2) may be accepted with significant oil and gas industry experience.
  • NYSC completion certificate
  • Must be proficient with computers
  • Minimum of five O’Level credits including English Language and Mathematics
  • A clearly written Statement of Purpose (max. 500 words) showing motivation for the course, its industry relevance, and expected national impact
  • Valid National Identity Number (NIN) verified through NIMC (verification fees apply)

PhD Scholarship Requirements

PhD applicants must fulfill the following:

  • NYSC discharge certificate
  • Must be computer literate
  • At least five credits in O’Level including English and Mathematics
  • A minimum of a Second Class Lower (2:2) in first degree plus a good postgraduate qualification
  • A research proposal (max. 5 pages) that is relevant to the oil and gas industry. This should include:
    • Topic
    • Introduction
    • Research objectives
    • Methodology
    • Data collection techniques

  • Lecturers applying must include a letter from their Vice Chancellor confirming they are not benefiting from any other scholarship
  • Valid and verified NIN is required before application submission

Required Documents for PTDF Application

Applicants must upload scanned copies of the following documents while filling the online application form:

  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
  • NYSC discharge certificate
  • WAEC/NECO/GCE/SSCE result (include result checker PINs)
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Local Government Identification Letter
  • Master’s degree certificate (for PhD applicants)
  • Evidence of membership in professional bodies (if applicable)

Important Notes:

  • The PTDF scholarship is strictly for the 2025/2026 academic year.
  • Only courses listed under the approved PTDF partner institutions are eligible.
  • Applications for courses not related to the oil and gas sector will be automatically disqualified.
  • Your chosen course must relate to your previous academic background.
  • Multiple applications will result in disqualification.
  • Previous PTDF awardees for the same study level (MSc or PhD) are ineligible to reapply.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and are expected to present their academic transcripts.
